THE HARBINGER OF THE DEATH OF NEWSPAPERS.

There was a time when people eagerly wait for newspapers in the morning. For them that was the only medium through which they can open the window and saw the world. But the arrival of digital media was a harbinger of the death of the newspapers.

According to ‘The Guardian’s’ studies in 2011, sales of Britain’s main national dailies have fallen by 6.75% in just 12 months. These figures have risen now. Recently media corporate James Murdoch had announced the closure of the ‘News of the World’, Britain’s largest selling leading Sunday newspaper. All the print publications are facing this threat. After almost 80 years of on the newsstand, ‘Newsweek’ America’s leading current affairs magazine published its last print edition in December 2012. Even the existing newspapers are trying to eliminate their supplementary editions due to loss of readers.

The main reasons for the closure of print publications are not only the lack of readers but also due to the downfall of income. Advertisement revenue was the backbone of all print editions. When digital media captured the attraction of advertisement world, soon it triggered the acceleration for the death bell of print.
Most of the print publications are moving to a digital-only edition. This will enable them to cut printing and distribution costs. The new media or online media traffic is increasing day by day. So the ad marketers are shifting towards them.

In almost every part of the world print has a sharp decline. When the western countries witness a fast death for print, in India the matter was different. Here the print media was flourishing even when digital media entered. But in the case of profitability it’s no doubt to say that slowly print will write off from India too. Leading publications like Times of India, The Hindu, Indian Express etc are all have online versions along with their print counterparts.

According to me no digital media can give the quietness like settling down with a cup of tea and a newspaper in the morning.
