SHUTTER - Film Review

Shutter is a 2012 Malayalam film The Debutante director Joy Mathew through ‘Shutter’ brings the lives of Indian Laborers mainly malayalis into focus. Starring Lal, Sreenivasan, Vinay Forrt, Sajitha, Riya Saira. The film is set and filmed in and around Kozhikode. The film portrays unexpected incidents happening in two days and a night in Kozhikode city. The story centre’s around the mess created by three men – a Gulf Malayali, a film director and an auto driver- after they meet a strange woman in bizarre circumstance. The film won the silver pheasant Award for Best feature film (Audience Prize) at the 17^th IFFK.

Rasheed(Lal) is a Malayali working in the Gulf. He is now in his hometown in order to fix his daughter’s engagement. He has a commercial property next to his house. Which consist of two shop rooms. During holidays Rasheed and his friends meet at this place for consuming alcohol.

During one of his drunken misadventures, Rasheed gets locked in his garage with a prostitute (Sajitha Madathil). His accomplice, Suran (Vinay Forrt), an auto rickshaw driver, locks the garage from the outside, to let to have some fun. In morning Suron gets a bag from his auto. The bag belongs to film director Mohanan (Srinivasan) he forget to take that back. When Suran at night goes to bring food for Rasheed and the lady, he meets Mohanan and tells him that the bag is with him he will bring it back morning. In utmost joy Mohanan compels him to have a drink. While going back with Mohanan in the auto Police caught them for drunken driving. Suran tells the story of Rasheed to Mohanan. In hurry Suran calls Rasheed forgetting that Rasheed doesn't took the phone when he was in garage. Unfortunately someone attends the phone and hear what Suran said.

In the garage Rasheed was so tensed and he tries to keep the lady by giving all his money, watch and ornaments. While inside the garage he came to know that his friends are not good. They need his company only during drinking times. After the tensions are over shutter was open. Rasheed thinks that Suran had opened. But Suran tells him that when he came it was already opened and he tells him that he mistakenly called on his phone. Heartbroken Rasheed went home and realised that it was his daughter who attended the phone. She tells him that she knew her father well , he won't commit a mistake. His mistake is his friends. Rasheed become happy.

Mohanan was waiting for a lady. The same old lady met Mohanan and while talking she gave a script to him. Actually it was his script which she had early taken from that bag when in garage. Mohanan says that he is no going to make a new film Shutter.
